Ananta temple in Goa is an attractive piece of architecture. Lord Ananta`s idol is carved in black stone. It has a simple architecture. Intricate designs are carved in the pillars of the temple. The temple surroundings are green. Lord Ananta is the serpent on which Vishnu sits. It is also said that the serpent carries the weight of the whole universe. There is a myth regarding this pose of Lord Vishnu. During the great deluge Vishnu incarnates himself as Narayan. He is seen floating on the hood of Ananta. As per Hindu mythology the universe was created from the naval of Lord Vishnu in the form of a single lotus stalk. Lord Brahma sat on it. The black stone in the temple records this eventuality.
Lamp tower is the most significant feature of this temple which rises high as two storeys. It is decorated during festivals with oil lamps thereby making it spectacular. There is a water tank which is a little away from the temple. The idol is made to sit on a chariot once a year and has a ride around the temple and the little village adjoining it which is called the annual yatra of the deity. It is a shrine of Lord Anant Sheshashavi. The temple also houses the idol of Shantadurga, Kamini, Grampurush and Narayan. The structure of the temple is not lavish.
