Ali Adil Shah I was an important figure of Indian history who was the fifth Sultan of Bijapur Sultanate.

The Persian doctors of religion were handed over full freedom when it came to religion the Shi`ah doctrine. It was during the reign of Ali Adil Shah I that Bijapur and Vijayanagar came in close contact with one another and Ali in actuality paid a visit to the city of Vijaynagar. One of the greatest events that marked the reign of Ali was the triumphant formation of the unbeaten confederacy of the Deccan Sultans.
As political nexus went quite deep, the Deccan Sultans were deadly against Vijayanagar and their victory over the latter at the Battle of Rakkasagi - Tangadagi in Talikoti in 1565 is embedded in history in golden words. The consequence of this battle was far reaching. Bijapur`s southern boundary was finally extended and the right side of the territory was expanded towards Vijayanagar, and further it unfurled the gates for the future expansion of Bijapur further south. He is again famed in history for being the husband of Chand Sultana, the mighty chivalrous woman of Ahmednagar.
