Alexander Ross

Alexander Ross acted as one of the most eminent Governors of Agra Province from the year 1835 to 1836, in undivided India under the rule of the British East India Company. The Agra Province was one of the earlier provinces of British India which was under the direct rule of the British Empire in India. The province was incorporated as a part of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. The territory of Agra Province existed from the year 1904 until the Indian independence in 1947. He also served as a member of the Indian Civil Service (ICS), which was the civil service of the Government of India during the era of the rule of British Empire in India. The members of the civil service were appointed under Section XXXII of the Government of India Act, 1858 of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. After the year 1886, the Indian Civil Service was officially known as Imperial Civil Service.

Alexander Ross was appointed as Judge and Magistrate of the District of Allyghur (Aligarh) in November 1808. He was also a Patron of Calcutta School Book Society from its establishment in the year 1817. On 8 January 1833, Ross was appointed as a Member of the council of the Governor General on a temporary basis. Later he was confirmed on 15 October 1833. Alexander Ross was eventually appointed as the Governor of the Presidency of Agra on 1 December 1835. He was preceded by William Blunt as the Governor of Agra Presidency. Ross served in office for over 6 months till 1 June 1836.

Alexander Ross was re-appointed as a Member of the council of the Governor General on 27 April 1836. He retired from the position on 15 October 1838. He became the President of the Council of India on 20 October 1837 and was appointed as Deputy Governor of the Presidency of Fort William and the Town of Calcutta (now Kolkata). Alexander Ross was the 1st Ordinary Member of Supreme Council of Government of India in the year 1838. Ross was also appointed as the Deputy Governor in the Government of Bengal in 1838 and as the Deputy Governor at the Garrison of Fort William in the same year.
