Akshayavat in Allahabad

Akshayavat is a sacred tree according to the Hindu Mythology. It is a banyan tree inside the Allahabad Fort that is mentioned in several historical works.

This sacred tree is found inside the Patalpuri Temple of Allahabad Fort, Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that if any one jump from the tree will get immortality. Currently this sacred tree is prohibited for public visit. As of 2011, tourists wishing to visit this tree need to take permission from the Commandant of Allahabad Fort"s Ordinance Depot. The site is open to all the pilgrims only on one day during the Kumbha Mela.

Legends of Akshayavat Tree
As per the legend, once Rishi Markandeya asked Lord Narayana to show him an example of the celestial power. Narayana created devastating flood in the entire world for a moment, during which only the Akshayavat could be seen above the water level.

Akshayavat Tree in Ramayana
Akshayavat has been mentioned in the Ramayana also. According to the epic, Lord Rama, Lord Lakshmana and Sita rested beneath the shed of the tree.

Akshayavat Tree in Jainism
Rishabha, a Jain Tirthankara is also said to have experienced tapasya beneath the historical Akshayavat at Prayag.

Akshayavat Tree in Buddhism
According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Lord Buddha planted a seed of the Prayag"s Akshayavat subsequently to Mount Kailash on a mountain known as the "Palace of the Medicine Buddha".
