Ahalya Asthan is a holy place that commemorates Devi Ahalya. It has an interesting anecdote assigned to it that holds a place of great religious importance in a developing democracy like India. Myth has it that when Gautama Rishi was away for a while, Lord Indra disguised as Gautama Rishi and visited Ahalya. Gautama learnt from his wife of the trick played by Lord Indra when he returned. The Rishi cursed Ahalya, who turned into stone. She remained like that till Lord Ram visited the ashram of Gautama, while on his way to Janakpur. Lord Rama removed the spell and Ahalya was back to normal. The present Ahalya asthan was built only in 1817 by Maharaja Chatra Singh Bahadur of Darbhanga. A fair is held there every year in the month of Chaitra on Ramanavami day. This lasts for several days.
