Located on the Satmala hill range, the Achala Fort stands tall at a height of about 4,024 ft and is known to be the westernmost fort on the mountain top. It is among one of those forts in Maharashtra that adjoins the Ahivant Fort and along with the Mohandar fort, these three forts are pretty close by. The purpose of the Mohandar and Achala Fort was to guard the Ahivant Fort.
History of Achala Fort
Initially the Achala Fort was under the control of Adil Shah in 1636 but eventually under the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, General Shaista Khan was sent to conquer all the forts in Nashik including Achala Fort. After the Mughals, the fort came under the Maratha Emperor Shivaji in the year 1670.
Soon after in 1676, under Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb armies were sent to win the Achala Fort and fierce battle was fought between Aurangzeb"s chieftain Mahabat Khan and Diler Khan. The attack was so fierce that the Ahivant fort was surrendered to the Mughals and subsequently, the Achala fort was also surrendered. In the year 1818, the fort was surrendered to Colonel Briggs along with other 17 forts after the fall of Trymbak Fort. Currently, the Achala Fort is under the control of the Government of India.

The Achala Fort is about 44 km away from Nashik and the nearest railway station is in Nashik at a distance of 70 km. The Nashik Airport is the closest at about 51 km from the fort.
