Chamarajanagar is the southernmost district in the state of Karnataka. It was carved out of the original larger Mysore District in the year 1998. Chamarajanagar town is the headquarters of this district. It is the third least populous district in Karnataka after Kodagu District and Bangalore Rural District.

Udupi is also one of oldest educational Centres in ancient India. Yakshagana, the drama and dance folk art is highly developed and popular in Udupi district as well as other coastal districts of Karnataka.
