Mandya District is a district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Mandya District is situated about 100 km from Bangalore.
Demography of Mandya District
According to the Population Census in the year 2011, Mandya District had population of 1,808,680 of which male and female were 909,441 and 899,239 respectively. The population of Mandya District constituted 2.96 percent of total population of Karnataka. The average literacy rate of Mandya District in 2011 was 70.14 compared to 61.05 of 2001. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy were 78.14 and 62.10 respectively. The total literates in Mandya District were 1,154,952 of which male and female were 645,133 and 509,819 respectively.
Tourism in Mandya District
There are a large number of ancient monuments in the form of temples and palaces in the Mandya district. Here, the temples are constructed mainly following the Hoysala and Chola style of architecture. The temple of `Lord Bhairava` of Mandya District can be seen in Adichunchangiri. The wonderful sanctuary ad hoc to peacocks, the beautiful birds are also found here. The temple of Mallikarjuna is situated at Besari in Mandya District. The temple structure is based on the grand Hoysala architecture. Earlier, it was termed as `Arjunapuri Agrahara`. It has Puranic references attributed to the epic hero Arjuna.
There are two other grand temples in Mandya District named the Narasimhaswamy temple and Varadarajaswamy temple. These are adorned with exquisite sculptures and intricate carvings and contain larger than life size figures of the deities. `Melukote` is a famous pilgrim centre in Mandya District. IT is well known for the temple dedicated to Lord Cheluvanarayana, where a Sanskrit Academy has been founded recently.
