There are 12 categories of awards presented by Filmfare in its annual Filmfare Awards, honouring the work of film professionals in the technical sphere, ranging from screenplay, dialogue, cinematography, choreography to editing, background score and visual effects.

Filmfare Technical AwardsThe Filmfare Technical Awards are presented by Filmfare to the different technical film personalities, in its annually held Filmfare Awards. The technical personnel provide the films the multifunctional backend support, from their very backbone of Story and Screenplay and on set support such as shots or cinematography, choreography, action and stunts coordination, sound design, sets or art direction, costume design, to the post-production functions of background score, editing and visual effects.

Under the technical awards, there are 12 categories in which Filmfare recognises and honours the work of film professionals with The Black Lady.

The Filmfare Award for Best Story is presented to recognise a writer who has written the most admirable story of a film of the preceding year, while the award for Best Screenplay is conferred to the screenwriter who has adapted the most appealing screenplay in accordance with the story. Erstwhile writer duo of Salim-Javed, filmmakers Basu Chatterjee and Rajkumar Hirani hold the maximum wins in the Screenplay category, with 3 each. The Filmfare Best Dialogue Award is given to the personality who prepares the most appreciable dialogues for a film. Actor-writer Kader Khan holds maximum wins in the category, with 6, followed by Gulzar with 4.

The Filmfare Best Action Award is presented to the action directors who conceptualise the action and thrill sequences. Sham Kaushal leads the category with 4 wins, followed by Allam Amin and Tinnu Verma with 3. The Art Direction award is given to production designers and art directors, who set up the most appropriate sets for production of films. The Filmfare Best Cinematography Award is presented to the cinematographers, who shoot and capture the scenes of a film. Erstwhile cinematographer Kamal Bose, who shot most of Bimal Roy classics, leads with 5 wins.

The Filmfare Award for Best Sound Design is given to the sound engineers and designers in films. The Filmfare Best Costume Design Award is presented to designers who create the apt costumes for the film characters. Dolly Ahluwalia holds the maximum record with 3 awards. The Filmfare Best Choreography Award is presented to choreographers who incorporate dance to the film"s songs. Saroj Khan, with a total of 8 wins, is the superlative winner in the category.

The Best Background Score award is awarded to composers who add background score to the movie and its sequences. A. R. Rahman holds the most wins, with 4. The Best Editing Award is presented to personalities who edit and assemble the shot scenes, contouring them into a complete film. Raj Kapoor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and A. Sreekar Prasad have maximum wins, 3 each. The Best Special Effects Award is presented to the artists who create the visually appealing and convincing effects in films.
