Libraries in Kerala present a vast knowledge base to the people of the state, encompassing all disciplines. The state also hosts the first public library of India namely, State Central Library.

Libraries in KeralaLibraries in Kerala present a treasure house of books to the people of the state, covering all possible disciplines. Many of the libraries are quite old and house an interesting repertoire of rare reading materials gathered over time.

Changanassery Smaraka Granthasala
Changanassery Smaraka Granthasala is located in the rural village of Iverkala in Kollam district. It is one of the oldest libraries of Kerala. This library was established by a social reformer named, Changanassery Parameswaran Pillai in the kingdom of Travancore in the 19th century. Affiliated to Kerala Granthasala Sangham, Changanassery Smaraka Granthasala is also a social convention centre of the village in which it has been established.

Desasevini Grameena Vayanasala
Desasevini Grameena Vayanasala is a grade "A" public library which was set up in 1947 in the Ernakulum district. Being a significant cultural centre as well as information repertoire, this library houses a collection of over 12,000 books encompassing various disciplines.

Edayar Grameena Vayanasala
Edayar Grameena Vayanasala, in Ernakulum district, is another Grade "A" public library affiliated to Kerala State Library Council. It hosts a huge collection of over 14,246 books. This library was founded in 1924 in St. Mary`s Jacobite Church with the name Martha Mariyam Vayanasala. It is also the centre of a number of cultural events.

Janaranjini Vayanasala
Janaranjini Vayanasala, situated in Idukki district, is considered to be one of the biggest libraries of the Kerala. This library holds a collection of about 30000 books of various genres. The two storied library building has a reading room, a computer centre and a conference room.

Municipal Library Chalakudy
Municipal Library Chalakudy, in Thrissur district of Kerala, is a famous public library. It is also popular as Municipal Public Library and Reading Room. It was established on 19th of April, 1951.

Netaji Smaraka Gramina Grandhasala
Netaji Smaraka Gramina Grandhasala was set up in 1995 by a young group in a village called Ezhumanthuruthu in Kottayam district. It has been named after Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. One of the main aims of the library is to introduce the new generation with the contributions of Netaji in freedom struggle.

Oriental Research Institute and Manuscripts Library
Oriental Research Institute and Manuscripts Library, located in the University of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram, is a prime centre of Indological studies in India. The library has been recognized at international level and conducts research works in the field of manuscripts. Being a treasure house of Indian culture, it has also worked for the microfilming of certain manuscripts belonging to some technical subjects.

State Central Library
State Central Library, also popular as Trivandrum Public Library, is situated in the city of Thiruvananthapuram. It is famous for being the first public library of India. It was founded in 1829 during the regime of His Highness, Sree Swathi Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore. It also houses a digital collection of several books. In addition to these, this library also hosts a multimedia section as well as children`s section.

Thrissur Public Library
Thrissur Public Library was established in 1872 in the Thrissur city of Kerala. It is accredited as the first computerized public library of the state. Initially it was set up at St. Mary`s College but was later shifted to Thrissur Town Hall in 1939.
