Poothanumthirayum is a popular ritual art of Kerala. A troupe of dancers dresses up as Kali or the Thira and the accompanying spirits who were created along with the goddess for the destruction of Daarikan, the demon. Thira wear masks while the spirits wear semi-circular wooden crowns. This dance is performed from house to house and on the premises of village shrines between the months of November and May every year.
