Medhajanana ritual is performed to evoke divine help in the sharpening of the intelligence, memory and tenacious power of the student. It is called by this name as one could get intellectually fit to grasp the knowledge of the Vedas. A student would become a scholar and a responsible man if he acts up to the symbolisms and suggestions of this ritual. Medhajanana is production of intelligence to a baby. This rite is performed the very next day after birth of a baby.
The father with a gold ring gives to the child honey and ghee with his ring finger. While feeding each item he utters one word of the Gayatri mantra. This ceremony speaks of the high concern of the Hindus about the intellectual health of a child. The items that are fed are conducive to the mental growth.
