48th Indian Infantry Brigade

The 48th Indian Infantry Brigade was established as an infantry formation under the British Indian Army. It remained in active service from 1941 till 1947 during the Second World War. The brigade was raised under the British Empire in India at Secunderabad in Andhra Pradesh in British India in October 1941. It was initially attached with the 19th Indian Infantry Division. Later the infantry formation was assigned to the 17th Indian Infantry Division.

The troops of the 48th Indian Infantry Brigade valiantly served during the Burma Campaign. In April 1942, it was allotted to the 1st Burma Division. Later in January 1947, the brigade was temporarily disbanded in Burma, while it was attached to the 17th Indian Infantry Division.

After the Indian independence and the partition of India, the 48th Indian Infantry Brigade was assigned to the independent army of the newly formed Union of India. It was reformed as an independent brigade. Later the brigade was attached to the new 17th Infantry Division on 15 November 1960 at Ambala. The troops participated in the annexation of Goa in December 1960. It also provided significant military service during the war between India and China in 1962 (Indo China Conflict, 1962).

* 1/10th Gurkha Rifles (April 1942)
* 2/5th Gurkha Rifles (May 1943 - September 1944)
* 1st West Yorkshire Regiment (August 1944 - August 1945)
* 9th Border Regiment (July 1943 - August 1944)
