Hyderabad Contingent Infantries

The Nizam`s Contingent or Nizam`s Army became the Hyderabad Contingent following the treaty of 1853. This contingent was divided into regiments or military units. One such unit was Infantry. Given below are the Infantries of the Hyderabad Contingent.

The 1st Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was an army infantry unit of the British East India Company. The Hyderabad Contingent was the armed force of the Nizam of Hyderabad. After the 1801 treaty, the Nizam of Hyderabad was obligated to maintain a military force at Hyderabad. The battalion was also popular as the Nizam`s Army and the Nizam`s Contingent. Afterwards the contingent was included in the Kumaon Regiment of the British Army in India. The Nizam`s Army was considered one of the Presidency Armies in British India. After the year 1903, the presidency armies were amalgamated together to establish the British Indian Army. The 1st Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was also known as the 94th Russell`s Infantry.

History of 1st Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent : The infantry regiment was established in the year 1813 as the 1st Battalion of the Russell Brigade for the Princely state of Hyderabad. It became a part of the armed force of Nizam of Hyderabad after signing of a treaty with the Governor General of India.

Military Operations of 1st Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent : The 1st Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent actively fought in the Battle of Mahidpur during the Third Anglo Maratha War. Later the unit provided significant service in the Siege of Nowah and the Capture of Nowah. The regiment also served in the First World War and was attached as a part of the 18th Indian Division. They later took part in the Mesopotamia Campaign. In the year 1918, the 94th Russell`s Infantry participated in the military action at the Fatha Gorge and on the Little Zab. It was attached to the Tigris Corps. The battalion also fought in the Battle of Sharqat in October 1918.

The various single battalion regiments were later merged to form multi battalion regiments comprising of 4 to 6 battalions in each unit. The regiment of the 94th Russell`s Infantry was re-designated as the 1st Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment in 1922.

On 15th August 1947, the nation gained freedom from the political supremacy of the British Empire in India. Consequently, British India was separated with the Partition of India and the British army was divided amongst the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. The regiment was designated as the 2nd Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent in the year 1854. The army unit of British India was again renamed as the 95th Russell`s Infantry in 1903. Afterwards the military company became the Kumaon Regiment in 1945.

All the regiments of the British Indian Army were renumbered and re- grouped by the British Government of India after the end of First World War. As a result, multi battalion regiments of 4 to 6 battalions in each unit were formed by merging the several single battalion regiments. The 95th Russell`s Infantry was re-designated as the 10th (Training) Battalion 19th Hyderabad Regiment in the year 1922.

Later the unit was developed as the Kumaon Regiment of the British Indian Army. Hyderabad Contingent was among the Presidency Armies in British India of the British East India Company until the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. In the year 1903, the armies of the British Indian presidencies were joined to form the united British Indian Army.

History of 3rd Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent : The regiment was formed in the year 1797 as the 2nd Battalion of the Aurangabad Division for the Princely state of Hyderabad. Afterwards it came under the administrative control of the East India Company. After the signing of a treaty in 1853 with the then Governor General of India, the 3rd Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was included as a part of the Army of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Eventually it was designated as the Hyderabad Contingent and was incorporated as the regular British Indian Army.

Military Operations of 3rd Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent : The 3rd Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent took part in the Battle of Mahidpur in the Third Anglo Maratha War. Later the troops participated in the Siege of Nowah and Capture of Nowah. The battalion also provided military service in the annexation of Burma in the Second Burmese War. The Sepoys of the unit did not revolt against the British authorities in the Great Revolt of 1857 and later took part in the Central India Campaign.

Development of 3rd Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent : After the conclusion of World War I, the British Government of India reformed and restructured the entire British Indian army. Moreover the separate single battalion regiments were united to form multi battalion regiments. The 96th Berar Infantry regiment was re-designated in the year 1922 as the 2nd Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment. After the Indian independence and the Partition of India, the nation was divided into the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan. The British Indian Army was divided accordingly among the 2 newly independent nations and the 3rd Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was allocated to the modern Indian Army.

The 4th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was a regular infantry regiment of the British East India Company. The Hyderabad Contingent was the armed force of the Nizam of Hyderabad, who was obliged to retain an army at Hyderabad after the 1801 treaty. The Contingent was also designated as the Nizam`s Army and the Nizam`s Contingent. Later the unit was incorporated as a part of the Kumaon Regiment of the British Indian Army. Hyderabad Contingent was among the 3 main Presidency Armies in British India, which were controlled by the British East India Company until the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 (also known as the Indian Rebellion).

Later the different presidency armies were amalgamated to form the united British Indian Army in the year 1903. The 4th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was also known as the 97th Deccan Infantry.

History of 4th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent : The 4th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was raised as the as 3rd Battalion of the Aurangabad Division in the year 1794. Subsequently the unit came under the administrative control of the Honourable British East India Company. In the year 1826 the unit was allotted as the 4th Regiment of Infantry of Nizam`s Cavalry. In the year 1854, the military regiment was titled as the 4th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent. The British Indian army regiment was developed as the 3rd (Deccan) Battalion 19th Hyderabad Regiment in 1922.

After the governmental withdrawal of the British Empire in India on 15th August 1947, the British India was divided into the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan by the Partition of India. As an effect, the British Indian Army was shared accordingly amongst the newly formed countries of India and Pakistan. The armies of the British Indian Presidencies functioned under the British East India Company until the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 but later the various presidency armies were joined together to raise the British Indian Army in 1903. The 5th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent was also known as the 98th Infantry unit. The military unit was also a part of the Madras Command.

Military Operations of 6th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent : The 6th Infantry of Hyderabad Contingent participated in the Third Anglo Maratha War and fought in the Battle of Mahidpur. The unit later took part in the Siege of Nowah and the Capture of Nowah. The 99th Deccan Infantry was stationed in the North West Frontier during the First World War and provided service in the military operations against the Mahsuds around Sarwakai. Later in April 1917, the British Indian regiment provided valuable service during the Mesopotamia Campaign. The unit later became a part of the Euphrates Defence Force and served in the lines of communication duties by the Euphrates River. Later the troops also fought in 2 military expeditions from Nasiriyeh in the year 1918.
