Guidelines Laid Down by Vastu Shastra for Study Room These are the rules enumerated by vastu science for the correct location, shape and height of the study room, along with appropriate directions of study table, furniture, book shelf and windows in the study room. It is based on the premise that good luck will enter the study room from appropriate directions of different objects and parts of the study room, along with it’s location in the house. Scientific reasons are also highlighted for designing the study room in a particular way. Location of the Study Room in the House The study room should always be on the west side, leaving the south-west and the north-west corners. At this place one will receive the good effect of Budh or Mercury, Guru or Jupiter, Chandra or Moon and Shukra or Venus. Mercury helps in increasing intelligence. Jupiter gives a boost to ambition and curiosity. Moon helps in conceiving new thoughts and ideas and Venus increases talent. The only way to accumulate wealth is from oratory and writing. It is important to keep the study place peaceful. If one is not going to sleep in the study room and use it only for meditation or spiritual reading, the pyramidal shape of this room is believed to give fantastic benefits. It should be ensured that the child sleeps with his head towards east or south in the study room. The head towards east helps in learning whereas the head towards south helps in maintaining magnetic balance of the body or earth. Bed in study room should be avoided as it may make the child lazy. It should be kept in mind that the study room should not be below the toilet or under a beam. Height of the Study Room The height of the study room should be the same as that of other rooms in the house. Furniture in the Study Room The book rack or book shelf should be constructed in the east, north, and north-east directions of the study room. The book shelf should not be placed in the center of the room. In fact, it is strictly advised to leave central portion of study room empty. Books kept in the south-west corner is not considered auspicious, hence they should remain untouched. It is also believed that the books kept in north-west corner have high chance of getting stolen by someone. The book shelf should never be located over or above the study table as this kind of arrangement may create unnecessary stress on the child. Vastu Shastra advocates that square or rectangular study tables will yield best results. If the study table is rectangular, then the length-breadth ratio should always be less than or equal to 1:2. The study table should not be placed against the wall. Rather, it should be kept some inches (at least an inch) away from it. The table lamp must be placed in the south-east corner of the study table. The study table should be kept neat and tidy. It should not be loaded with a lot of books. If a table lamp is preferred by the child for better vision and concentration, then it should be placed in south-east of the table. South-east corner of the reading room should be used to place the computer. It is also suggested to place a pyramid in the study room to balance energy and increase ones memory power. A pendulum clock must be hanged on the northern wall of the learning area. Images of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati in the study room are considered auspicious. Television may interrupt with concentration, so it is advised not to keep it in the learning room. Walls of the Study Room A solid wall behind student signifies support. It is believed that space between the student and the wall in front facilitates open mentality and will lead to the conception of new ideas. One should paint the walls of the study room in light and soothing colors. Colors like sky blue, cream, light green or white can grace the walls of the study room. Precious certificates or trophies for display should be mounted on the southern wall of the study room. Windows in the Study Room Windows should be provided in the east, north or west wall of the study room. Door of the Study Room The door of the study room should be in north, north-east, east or west direction. Doors in south-east, north-west and south-west corners of the study room should be avoided. It is also recommended that the door should be two shuttered Toilet in the Study Room One should avoid constructing a toilet in the learning area. Guidelines Laid Down by Vastu Shastra for Studying While studying, sunlight or natural light must be available in the study room. One should sit facing the east or north direction, as vastu advocates that it increases concentration. One should not sit below the beam while reading as it may cause unnecessary pressure. The student should not face blank wall or window while learning. Mirror reflection in the room should be avoided. This may cause unnecessary strain on the child. If these guidelines, laid down by the Vastu Shastra are followed, then it is believed to bring compatibility between ones desire to learn, the constructed positive environment and his concentration.
