Kota is enriched with medieval history. From 12th Century AD, Kota was administered by Rao Deva, a Chauhan chieftain belonging to the Hada clan. In 17th Century, Mughal emperor Jahangir, Rao Ratan Singh, gave the smaller principality of Kota to his son, Madho Singh and ruled till British era. Kota became independent in 1579 AD. It was not before 1624 AD, Kota was treated as a separate district. Initially the history of Bundi is associated with Kota as it was a part of the kingdom of Bundi.
