Early Life of Sharda
Sharda was born to a family of Vaishnavite Iyengar who originally hail from Tamil Nadu. She is an arts graduate. Her grandfather, a scholar, gave her training in Sanskrit and Vedic culture. She possessed a passion for music since her childhood and used to perform regularly at school functions.
Career of Sharda
At the initial phase of her career Sharda received an offer for a voice test by showman Raj Kapoor after the latter heard her song in a function at Shrichand Ahuja’s residence in Tehran. She got her first major break in Bollywood by singing the song ‘Titli Udi’ for the 1966 film Suraj. The song became a chartbuster, creating a milestone in the history of Filmfare Awards. Till the year 1966 Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer was restricted to only one category in which either the male or female singer used to win the award. However in that year the song Titli Udi was tied as best song with Mohd. Rafi’s song ‘Baharo Phool Barsao’, an incident which occurred for the first time in the Filmfare Awards. Although the award was not won by Sharda, a new tradition of giving two awards for best playback singer, one for male singer and the other for female singer, began.
Shankar of the Shankar Jaikishan duo greatly promoted the talent of Sharda and she sang in each and every composition composed by Shanker. She sang for the very last time in Kaanch ki Deewar (released in 1987). Sharda is credited with singing along with the stalwarts like Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, K. J. Yesudas, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur. She has done playback singing for leading actresses of the time like Vyjayanthimala, Saira Banu, Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz, Rajashree and even Helen. Sharda also has the honour of launching the first ever pop album in India in 1971 titled Sizzlers and launched by HMV. At that time pop album was an outlandish concept. However she has performed numerous times on stage mainly in the occasions like Filmfare Awards gunction, charity shows, naval functions and many more. Apart from Hindi she has also lent her voice to Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi and English songs.
For the Filmfare Best Female Singer Award, Sharda has been nominated for four times but she won it only once. During the year 1970s, she as a music director worked in the films like Mandir Masjid, Maila Aanchal, Kshitij, Tu Meri Main Tera and Maa Behen Aur Biwi. Sharda also released her Ghazal album called Andaaz-e-Bayan Aur on 21st July in the year 2007. The Ghazal album contains Mirza Ghalib’s Ghazals. Veteran Actress Shabana Azmi released the album at Juhu Jagriti, Mumbai. She also authored the song ‘Ek Chehra Jo Dil Ke Kareeb’ for the film Garam Khoon in 1980 which was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. She has also written many songs for music composer Shanker. Presently she has been giving music lessons to children and promising singers.
