The 12th Pioneers regiment was a former infantry unit that was administered by the British Indian Army. It was a part of the Bengal Army, which was official armed force of the Bengal Presidency under the Honourable British Indian Army. The army of Bengal Province was included as one of the main Presidency Armies in British India. Later the regiment became a part of the United British Indian Army, along the British Presidency Armies. The regiment of the 12th Pioneers was also known as The Kelat-i-Ghilzie Regiment.
The 12th Pioneers was raised as the 3rd Battalion, Shah Shuja`s Force in the year 1838. The troops of the esteemed regiment valiantly fought at the battle of fort Kelat-i-Ghilzie in 1842. The unit was permitted to retain the title as a reward for its distinguished service. The regiment was re-designated as the 12th Pioneers in 1903.
The British Government of India reformed the British Indian Army in the year 1922. As a consequence, the separate single infantry regiments were unified together to form larger multi battalion infantry units which consisted of four to six battalions. The 12th Pioneers regiment were joined with the 2nd Bombay Pioneers in the same year. Eventually the army unit was dissolved in the year 1929.
