Zahir-ud-Daula

Zahir-ud-Daula, officially known as Sir Zahir-ud-Daula Bahadur GCSI, was the titular Nawab of Arcot, also referred to as Nawab of the Carnatic. He ruled the Carnatic region of South India from the year 1874 to 1879. The reign of the Nawab of Arcot is a significant period in the history of Tamil Nadu. He was born to father Azim Jah, who was the first Nawab of Arcot. Further more, his father was the cousin of Ghulam Muhammad Ghouse Khan, the 12th and last Nawab of the Carnatic. After the death of Azim Jah, his father, in the year 1874, Zahir-ud-Daula was accepted and identified as the titular Nawab of the Arcot or Amir-i-Arcot, currently in Vellore, in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Later in 1876, Zahir-ud-Daula relocated the official residence to the Amir Mahal. The Nawab of Arcot participated in the Delhi Durbar, held in January 1877. During the event, Queen Victoria was formally declared as the Empress of India. Zahir-ud-Daula was awarded the Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India (GCSI) and the honour of a 15 gun salute. Nawab Zahir-ud-Daula of Arcot died in the year 1879 and was buried with full state honours.
