Way of life of Parsis

Way of life of Parsis may be described as half-European and half-Hindu. With the passage of time they have adapted more English manners and modes of living. As per Greek historians, the ancient Persians were mainly distinguished by their readiness in copying foreign customs and manners. This peculiarity has been retained well by their descendants to the present day.

At the time of their sojourn in Gujarat, one of the states of India, they willingly adopted the language, dress and other social customs of that country. In recent times, they have taken the European customs and manners completely. The influential and educated classes of Parsi community have already embraced in their domestic life the comforts, elegancies, conveniences and the costliness of the European style.

The domestic arrangements of the residents of the Parsis have also undergone a major change. Their houses are usually constructed in good taste, upon well-conceived plans, and they are suitably ventilated. Their garden-houses or villas are some of the best in the city of Mumbai in Maharashtra. Their drawing-rooms are luxuriously furnished and decorated, and the walls are decorated with historical pictures and landscapes, while the major boast of a Parsi is to see his house brightly lit up with chandeliers and lamps of all descriptions. Among the different houses of Parsis in Mumbai, the best private dwelling-house is Petit Hall. It is owned by a highly-respected Parsi gentleman, Mr. Dinsha Manakji Petit.
