Vatukur Temple
Vatukur temple is 17th of the 22 Tevara Stalams in the Tamilnadu region. Vatukur temple is also known by the name ‘Vandaar Koyil’.
Vatukur temple is an ancient shrine nestled in the Tamil Nadu state of India. It is situated east of Villuppuram near the Chinnababu samudram railway station, enroute to Pondicherry, at a distance of 17 km from Villuppuram. Vatukur temple is also known as Vandaar Koyil. This shrine is known for the Bhairava manifestation of Shiva - Samhara Bhairava Vatukanathar - Vatukurnathar. This is the 17th of the 22 Tevara Stalams in the Nadu Naadu region of Tamil Nadu.
Architecture of Vatukur Temple
The present structure is from the period of Parantaka Chola I. Inscriptions from the period of Raja Raja are seen here. Panels with miniature sculptures can be seen in the main shrine. Images around the sanctum include those of Bhikshatanar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhavar, Bhrama, Durga, Vinayakar, and Ardhanareeswarar. This temple also has a shrine to Subramanyar. Special services are offered to Bhairavar in the month of Scorpio (Kartikai - Ashtami). Samhara Bhairavar is one of the eight Bhairava manifestations.
