Tiruvaikavur Temple

Legends: A hunter unknowingly worshipped Shiva with vilva leaves on the night of Shivaratri. The Sapta Matas worshipped Dakshinamurthy here. There is an image of Veenadhara Dakshinamurthy here. The Vedas in the form of Vilva leaves were worshipped Shiva here. There are no Dwarapalakas here, for according to legend they were sent to protect the devout hunter. Brahma and Vishnu were the Dwarapalakas here, and their festival images are found here. The Nandi faces the entrance making an attempt to subdue Yama who had come to end the hunter`s life.

Temple: Covers an area of an acre. Images portray the legend of the hunter. The Ambal shrine is important here. The original temple was made of brick and mortar and dates back to the Pallava period. It was renovated by Kulottunga Cholan in the 11th century.

Festivals: Sivaratri is celebrated in great pomp here.
