Tiruvaalkoliputrur Temple is also known as Vaaloliputrur or Tiruvaalapputrur. It is considered as the 29th in the series of the Tevara Stalams located in Chola Nadu north of the river Kaveri.
Legend: Pandavas and Draupadi worshipped Shiva here. The Durga Shrine here is considered important. Durga slay Mahishasuran at Kadaattalaimedu. The serpent Vasuki residing in a snake hill - Putru worshipped Shiva here. Shiva also blessed a thirsty Arjuna with water, and hid his sword in an ant hill (Vaal Oli Putrur) and then revealed his Self.
Temple: It has three prakarams and covers an area of 1.25 acres. A Rajagopuram adorns the entrance to the inner prakaram. The utsava idol of Vasuki is beautiful. The shrine to Durga is important. Vaaloliputtur is also known as Durgapuram, and it is believed here that Durga has to be worshipped here first. The Navagrahams are absent in this shrine.
Festivals: The annual festival is observed in the month of Vaikasi. Other festivals celebrated here include Kartikai Deepam, Arudra Darisanam, Pankuni Uthram, Aavani Moolam, Aadi Pooram, Navaratri, Vinayaka Chaturti and Skanda Sashti.
