Tiruppurampayam Temple is one of 24 shrines special to Dakshinamurthy and is surrounded by Manniyaru, Kollidam and the Kaveri. It is one of the 46th in the series of Tevara Stalams located north of the river Kaveri.
Legend: This shrine remained unaffected by a great deluge, hence the name Purampayam came to be (Puram-outside). Brahma worshipped Shiva here. Vinayakar is called Pralaya Kaala Vinayakar here. It is believed that Sambandar causes miracles to happen at this shrine. Shiva came as a witness to save a helpless devotee, hence the name Saksheeswarar. A certain King of Magadha was cured of the `Muyalaka` disease here.
Shiva revealed the eternal truth to Sanakar and other munis under the banyan tree on the banks of the Brahma Theertham, facing South (Dakshinamurthy).
Temple: The Amman shrine is housed in the second Prakaram. Shiva`s sanctum is past the Mahamandapam housing the other gods. Dakshinamurthy shrine is located on the southern bank of the temple tank. There is also a shrine to Sattanathar here. Most of the inscriptions go back to Imperial Cholas detailing the grants made to the temple.
Festivals: The annual Brahmmotsavam is celebrated in the Tamil month of Maasi and the annual Vinayakar festival is observed in the Tamil month of Avani. Kartikai Deepam, Arudra Darisanam, Vishu, Aadipooram, Navaratri, Skanda Sashti and Taippoosam are celebrated here.
