Tirumeeyachur Temple

This temple is located at Peralam near Mayiladuturai, Tiruvarur. The deity worshipped is Shiva.

Tirumeeyachur TempleTirumeeyachur Temple is the 56th in the series of Tevara Stalams located south of the river Kaveri.

Legend: Surya placed Shiva and Parvati on an elephant and prayed here.

Temple: It occupies an area of two acres. The Vimanam is in Gajaprishta style, a rarity in the Chola kingdom. It is common practice to demolish the Ilamkoyil after the consecration. At Tirumeeyachur, both the shrines are preserved and worship is carried out at both. Appar means Meeyachur Ilamkoyil as Totrum Koyil or the main temple to be, and Tonriya Koyil - the Ilamkoyil already in existence.

The niche images found here are Vinayakar, Ganga Visarjanamurthy, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhavar, Bhrama, Uma-Alinganamurthy, Durga and Rishabantikar. There are beautiful and finely carved toranas over the niches. On the outer walls of the sanctum are panels of miniature sculptures. Ganapati is the Dwarapalakas` to the sanctum. The sun`s rays illuminate the sanctum for a period of seven days from the 21st day of the month of Aries.

Festivals: Festivals celebrated include Aadipperukku, Kartikai Deepam, Arudra Darisanam, Rathasaptami in Thai, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Navaratri and Skanda Sashti.
