It is regarded as the 121st in the series of Tevara Stalams south of the river Kaveri. A black sparrow (Valiyan) circumambulated the shrine, hence the name Valivalam. Surya is said to have worshipped here and the wheels of his charriot are believed to have created the Chakra Theertham moat.

Architecture of Tiru Valivalam Temple
The temple occupies an area of 1.8 acres. It is designed with 3 prakarams and an 85 feet tall Rajagopuram. The sanctum is a monolithic structure. Traces of a moat and grand walls can be found here. The Ambal shrine is located in the outermost prakaram. Ekachakra Perumal has a shrine here.

Festivals of Tiru Valivalam Temple
The temple is known for its several festivals. Six worship services are offered each day. The annual Bhrammotsavam is conducted in the month of Chittirai. This festival is concluded with the float festival in the Chakra Theertham.
