Junagadh district is located on the Kathiawar peninsula in western Gujarat, with the city of Junagadh as its administrative headquarters. The district is surrounded by Rajkot district to the north, Porbandar district to the northwest, Amreli district in the east and in the southwest by the Arabian Sea. The district has a population of 2,448,173 of which 29.06% are urban (2001 census). Porbander, Gandhiji`s birthplace was earlier a part of the Junagadh district, before Porbander tore away to be a separate district. Junagadh is renowned for the Gir sanctuary, only home of the Asiatic lions. Junagadh has a mountain range, Girnar that is a pilgrim site for both Jainism and Hinduism. Junagadh is an ancient city, situated in the erstwhile Saurashhtra. Through various phases of history Junagadh is described with equal importance and for many centuries it was the capital of the western region of Gujarat. Stippled with hills, the medieval city derived its name from an old fort of the same name, Junagadh. It is a highly revered pilgrim site, producing a number of saints in the long run. The most famous of them is the Gujarati saint-poet Narsimha Mehta. Junagadh is an ancient city of temples, palaces and caves.
