Chitradurga district gets its name from Chitrakaldurga, an umbrella-shaped lofty hill found there. Legends date Chitradurga District to the period of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The whole district lies in the valley of the Vedavati River, with the Tungabhadra River flowing in the northwest. There are many historical monuments and temples in Chitradurga district.

The temples of Chitradurga district are mostly set amidst rocky surroundings inside the fort complex on the hill. Ekanatha Temple and Chandravalli Caves are attractive sites for the tourists round the year. The Hidimbeshwara Temple is one of the oldest temples of Chitradurga district. Other temples of Chitradurga district that attract thousands of tourists are Brahmagiri, Vanivalas Sagar, Nayakanakatte, Jogimatti, and Jattinga, Rameswara. Hiriyur situated on the right bank of Vedavathi River is best known for its Therumalleshawara temple. The temple has imposing lofty gopura and the ceiling of the main hall is decorated with scenes from the Shivapurana and Ramayana.
