Aurangabad from Persian meaning "Built by the Throne", named after Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, is a city in Maharashtra. This district centre is the administrative headquarter of Aurangabad Division, or Marathwada region.
The city is packed with medieval historical monuments like the World Heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves. However, due to its rich cultural heritage and the fact that it is located in such a convenient geographical location, Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and Mohammed-bin-Tughlak attempted to relocate their capital city to this particular seat of prosperity, though failing in their own quest. Aurangzeb, during his reign had built the Bibi-ka-Maqbara, a landmark of a mausoleum resembling the Taj Mahal and also a medieval watermill. Aurangbad, during his reign and also in the present era, is rich in its textile industry with weavers producing materials like pathani, himroo and kimkhwab.
