Tellicherry Fort is situated in the town of Tellicherry or Thalassery in Kannur District in the state of Kerala. The geographical coordinates are latitude 11.748292°N and longitude 75.486134°E. It was constructed under the administration of the British East India Company in 1708. It was built as a strongly fortified defensive base in the Malabar Coast. Tellicherry Fort was the centre of the region and greatly contributed towards the development of Thalassery.
History of Tellicherry Fort
The Dalwai of the Kingdom of Mysore, Hyder Ali, attempted to capture the fortress during his military campaign to Malabar, but remained unsuccessful. After the end of the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Tipu Sultan, the son of Hyder Ali was compelled to surrender the Malabar District to the East India Company in 1792.
Architecture of Tellicherry Fort
Tellicherry Fort is a square shaped structure and has huge walls and ramparts. The strong fortifications and bastions are located towards the edges of the building. The dorrs and gateways of the fort are massive and have carvings on them. There is also a secret tunnel inside the premise which was used in case of emergency escape during attacks of the enemies.
The fort of Tellicherry is now being developed as a tourist destination under the maintenance and management of the Archaeological Survey of India.
