Tarun Kumar Gogoi is the present Chief Minister of the Indian state of Assam and is also an Indian National Congress Party member.

Tarun Kumar Gogoi, Chief Minister of AssamTarun Kumar Gogoi is the current Chief Minister of Assam and is a member of the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the 5th Lok Sabha, in 1971, from Jorhat constituency. According to Gogoi, Assam is a multi-racial and multi-religious society and any fundamentalist group to disrupt normal life in the state has put the security forces on alert to prevent attempts. Tarun Kumar Gogoi is also a lawyer by profession.

Early Life of Tarun Kumar Gogoi
Tarun Kumar Gogoi was born on 1st April 1936, on the Rangajan Tea Estate in the Jorhat district of Assam to father Late Dr. Kamaleswar Gogoi and mother Late Usha Gogoi. He completed his education from Jorhat Government Boys School and later graduated from J B College, Jorhat. Later, Tarun Kumar Gogoi completed his LL.B from Gauhati University.

Political Career of Tarun Kumar Gogoi
In 1968 he was a Member of the Municipal Board at Jorhat. In the year 1971, Tarun Kumar Gogoi entered the 5th Lok Sabha. He became the Joint Secretary of All India Congress Committee in the year 1976. In the year 1977, Gogoi was re-elected to the 6th Lok Sabha. Tarun Kumar Gogoi was re-elected to the 7th Lok Sabha in 1983. He also became the Joint Secretary All India Congress Committee and in 1985 he became the General Secretary of All India Congress Committee. During 1986-1990 he served as the President of the Pradesh Congress Committee P.C.C.(I), Assam and later the Vice-President, P.C.C.(I), Assam.

In 1991, for the 4th time, Tarun Kumar was elected to the 10th Lok Sabha. During 1991-93, Tarun Kumar Gogoi served as the Union Minister of Food (Independent Charge). He held the portfolio of Food Processing Industry as the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) from 1993 to 1995.

During 1996-98, Tarun Kumar Gogoi was elected as the Member of Assam Legislative Assembly, from Margherita Constituency. To the 12th Lok Sabha, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the 5th time in 1998. Again in 1999, Gogoi was re-elected to the 13th Lok Sabha. He assumed the Office of Chief Minister of Assam, on 17th May, 2001. He has also served as the Ex-Treasurer, All Assam Moina Parijat & Children`s Organisations and Ex-Chairman, Bharat Yuvak Samaj. In the year 2011, Tarun Kumar Gogoi led the Congress Party to win in the state of Assam for a 3rd consecutive term. Gogoi has also held various other posts such as Ex-Director, Vayudoot; Ex-Chairman, Assam Small Scale Industries Development Corporation; Former Joint Secretary, Jorhat Law College; Member, Bar Council, Assam; Ex-Vice-President, J.B. College Students` Union; and Assam Inter College Students` Union; Ex-Commander, Students` Volunteer Corps.

Tarun Kumar Gogoi gained massive progress in developmental politics, and thrived in maintaining Law and Order in Assam, by reducing the efforts of terrorists during his rule. Gogoi has also been successful in improving the peace process with the various terrorist groups, particularly with United Liberation Front of Assam, in 2011.
