The Surma Valley Light Horse regiment was an army unit of the Auxiliary Forces under the British Indian Army. It was a volunteer corps unit that comprised mostly of the tea planters from the region. The military force was raised on 22nd October 1880 as the Sylhet Volunteer Rifle Corps by the British administration in India.
The headquarters of the Surma Valley Light Horse was at Silchar, presently in the Indian state of Assam. On the 6th April 1883, the regiment was renamed as the Cachar and Sylhet Mounted Rifles. The troops of the battalion wore khaki formal dress and the unit had the motto "Non Sibi Sed Patriae". Eventually on 13th August 1886, the volunteer corps unit was designated as the Surma Valley Light Horse.
