Superintendent of Infantry

Superintendent of infantry shall divide his troops into five categories. Categorically the troops shall be divided into hereditary troops, hired troops, the corporate body of troops, as well as troops of the friendly and unfriendly enemy kings and wild tribal troops. Overall he shall keep complete knowledge regarding the strength and weakness of all the troops under him.

Superintendent of infantry should be thorough regarding the types of warfare to be fought in the battle field. He should be familiar with the nature of fighting in the low grounds, on open fields, of fraudulent attacks, of fighting under the cover of entrenchment, from the heights and of fighting in days and nights. Alongwith this superintendent of infantry should also keep complete knowledge regarding the fitness and unfitness of the troops.

Thus, superintendent of infantry along with his troops form the next wing of the armed forces which actually face the battle ground and fight for their lives. The victory of a kingdom depends on the superior warfare fought by these infantry which has been considerably mentioned in Arthashastra.
