The principal deity or the moolavar here is called Neelavarna Purana. The four armed image of the lord placed in the main sanctum is extremely captivating. The yogic image of Narasimha, assisting the principal deity is also impressive.

Inscription of Sri Neelavarna Perumal temple, Nanmangalam, Chennai: - The inscriptions engraved on the temple walls depicted the Pallava age essentially. The inscriptions reflect that the principal deity was constructed during their period and the Pallava kings were the ardent followers of the Vedic tradition. The inscriptions also pointed out the sanctum as one of the 108 Divya Desams.
