Sikkal Singaravelan Temple is a famous temple located in Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu. This Shivastalam is a maadakkovil that has been constructed at an elevation in Sikkil. The temple is regarded as the 83rd in the series of Tevara Stalams in the Chola kingdom situated south of the Kaveri River. The Muchukunda Cholan is said to have built the temple. A Tyagaraja Shrine is also located here but it is not a part of the Saptavitanka Stalams. Keevalur is located in close proximity to Sikkal.
Legend of Sikkal Singaravelan Temple
Sikkal Singaravelan Temple is associated with a legend. According to it Vashishta is said to have prayed to Lord Shiva to recover his Kamadhenu, whose milk flowed and froze forming butter. He fashioned out a lingam of butter. Vasishtar tried to move it but did not succeed. Thus the lingam set there permanently.
Architecture of Sikkal Singaravelan Temple
The Sikkal Singaravelan Temple is adorned with a 7 tiered Rajagopuram located near the entrance to this temple. It is almost 80 feet in height. There are inscriptions from the Imperial Chola period and from the Vijayanagara period. There are many paintings that depict legends related to Subramanya. Every day the idol is worshiped six times. Marriages are performed here. The annual festival Bhrammotsavam is celebrated in the month of Chittirai. Soorasamharam is enacted during this festival.
