In the ritual of Saptapadi the husband makes the wife walk forward seven steps in a northern direction. This ceremony is legally important as after the completion of the ritual, the marriage is regarded legally complete. Thereafter they pray to God in order to get strength to:
* Accomplish social and religious responsibilities.
* Share their wealth
* Share happiness and sorrows of each other.
* Protect them from passion, anger, greed, attachment and ego.
* Achieve true enjoyment
* Mind and body should be faithful.
* Pray for universal peace
During this ritual the groom holds his wife`s right hand in his right hand. Thereafter he bends down and holds the right toe of his wife with his right hand thereby helping her take seven steps around the sacred fire. Before each step a Vedic mantra is recited to invoke the blessings of Lord Vishnu. The bride and groom circle the holy fire seven times with corners of their garments tied together. Each step symbolizes a different aspect of the marriage.
