Sannyasi Rebellion

Sannyasi Rebellion was occurred in the year 1762 and ended in 1774 AD. A combination of Sannyasis (Hindu Saints) and Muslim Fakirs carried on the Sannyasi Rebellion.

The Sannyasi Rebellion was regarded as one of the most primitive rebellion against British East India Company in Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. They were regarded as the stoutest and most active men in India. They, according to official records as the "inhabit or rather possess the country lying south of the hills of Tibet from Kabul to China."

In 1763 AD, they infested the countryside round Backergunj and took possession of the English Factory at Dacca now in Bangladesh. In 1768, they had a sanguinary conflict with the British East India Company in the Saran District of Bihar.

In 1770, they appeared in Dinajpur District of West Bengal and then in Dacca and in the northern part of Rajshahi in Bangladesh. They extended their depreda-tions far and wide and were able to create serious trouble to the ruling authorities

Carrying incursions to Bengal near Purnia District (now in Bihar), Tirhut (Bihar) and Dinajpur (Now in Bengal) culminating in a remarkable victory in 1772 in Rangpur over the United British and Muslim forces. The Sannyasis became a real menace and but for a change in the attitude, so it is alleged, in the leader or leaders, they would have been able to hold sway for long over a vast tract of territory then held by the British.
