Samayapuram Maariamman TempleDeity: Maariamman, is a manifestation of Shakti - the mother goddess. Local beliefs relate this deity with cures for small pox and chicken pox.

Legend: Shiva created Kali, from the poison he swallowed after amruth manthan, and decreed that she kill Daarukaasuran and she was called Kali. Mariamman is a form of Kali, and is also called Mahamaayi or Seethala Gowri. Dasaratha, father of Rama worshipped here. The palanquin bearers paused for rest on the way, placing the palanquin on the ground and found unable to lift it. A temple was built close by Tiruchirappalli, which was later expanded by Vijayaranga Chokkanatha Nayak of Madurai.

Offerings are made of salt, jaggery (brown sugar), lentils, and jewelry by devotees.
