Standing tall at an elevation of 2,600 ft, the hill fort of Samangad is located in the Kolhapur district in Maharashtra. Located on the oval shaped top of the hill, the Samangad Fort is situated between Vishalgad, Panhala, Bhudargad, Rangana and other forts, and was once used as a supply centre.

History of Samangad Fort
Built by the Shilahar king Bhoj II, the Samangad Fort later came under the Maratha rule in 1667 under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji. He improved the fortifications of the fort but in 1688, the Mughals won the hill fort. The fort is also the tomb of famous warrior Shri Pratap Rao Gujar who fought against the Adil Shahi army. The Samangad Fort passed various hands before it finally came under the British rule in 1844 and remained under their control until the Indian Independence. Currently, the Samangad Fort is preserved by the Government of India.

Other than rock cut water cisterns on the premises of the Samangad Fort, surrounding the fort is the 8 ft high wall, which is still intact. There are temples dedicated to the Hindu deities Lord Hanuman and Lord Shiva and are popular places of attraction. The Samangad Fort has been developed as a tourist spot by the Government of Maharashtra.
