Rana Kirat Singh, also known as Kirat Singh Rana was the last Jat ruler of Gohad state, which is currently in the district of Bhind in Madhya Pradesh state. He was the first Jat Rana ruler of the princely state of Dholpur. Kirat Singh belonged to the Bamraulia gotra of Jats. In the year 1785, after Rana Chhatar Singh died, the region of Gohad was engulfed in disruptive crimes like killing and lawlessness. This continued for the next 18 years. Neither the British nor the Marathas could control the Jat rebels. In 1803, the son of Samant Tarachand of Neerpur village, Kirat Singh, was unanimously declared as the new Jat ruler of Gohad by the revolutionary Jats. Samant Tarachand was one of the cousins of Rana Chhatar Singh. The coronation ceremony of Kirat Singh was conducted at Bagathara fortress, located at a distance of 12 miles from Gohad, as Gwalior and Gohad were in the possession of Sindhias.
On 1st November 1803 the British, led by Lord Lake, defeated Sindhia and stained his reputation. The British forces won with the support of the Jats; thus the European army officers had immense friendliness with Jats. Later the British formed a treaty with Jats and with their support overpowered the Marathas and gained back thr regions of Gohad and Gwalior from them. Gwalior was taken over by the British East India Company and Gohad was given to the Jats in the year 1804.
Later Rana Kirat Singh moved to Dhaulpur as the kingdom of Gohad was given to the Marathas under a revised treaty between the British and the Marathas dated 22 November 1805. Under this treaty, Rana Kirat Singh, Jat Ruler of Gohad, was given Rajakheda, Badi and Dhaulpur as substitute for Gohad. Rana Kirat Singh moved to the territory of Dhaulpur in December in the year 1805. Maharaja Rana Kirat Singh reigned over Dhaulpur up to 1836, when he died. His death occurred on Baishakh Sudi 5 Samvat 1892.
Therfore Kirat Singh was the first Maharaja Rana or ruler of the region of Dhaulpur. The Rana had 2 sons, Rana Pohap Singh and Rana Bhagwant Singh. Pohap Singh succeeded his father Rana Kirat Singh to the throne after his death in 1836.
