Rafi Ud Darajat

Rafi Ud Darjat was the 10th emperor of the Mughal Dynasty. He was born on 30th November 1699 and was the youngest son of Rafi Us Shan and the nephew of Azim ush Shan. The Syed Brothers declared him as the emperor and he succeeded to the throne after Furrukhsiyar on 28 February 1719.

Rule of Rafi ul Darajat
Rafi ud Darajat assumed the throne with the help of the Syed Brothers. Thus, he remained completely under their control and ruled like a puppet ruler. The Syed Brothers made all possible efforts to restrict his power. The rule of Rafi ud Darajat went through great turmoil. His uncle Nekusiyar ascended the throne at the Agra Fort on 18 May 1719 thinking himself to be more eligible ruler than Rafi ul Darajat. The Syed Brothers immediately took all the necessary measures to curtail his power and dethrone him. They thought of punishing the offender. They soon succeeded in their efforts. Within three months of Nekusiyar`s rule the fort was surrendered and he was arrested. Amir Ul Umara imprisoned him at Salimgarh and he died there in 1723.

For the next few months Rafi ul Darajat but soon feel sick due to lung disease. He wished his elder brother to be his successor. Thus, he retired as the emperor on 6 June 1719, after a reign of 3 months and six days. His elder brother, Rafi Ud Daulah ascended to the throne after two days. On 9 June 1719 i.e. five days later after he was dethroned, Rafi Ud Darjat died. His remains were buried at Mehrauli in Delhi close to a shrine of Sufi saint, Khawaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki
