Quit India ResolutionThe Cripps Mission is usually a complete failure, after the failure of the Mission, there was a feeling of aggravation among all section of the people. The Congress done nothing so far to embarrass the British Government apart from demanding a Constituent Assembly to frame a new constitution for the country could no longer sit on the fence when the Japanese were almost knocking at the doors of the country.

Gandhiji started his campaign in April 1942, for `orderly British withdrawal` from India. In his views, "whatever the consequences…to India her real safety and Britain`s too lie in an orderly and timely British withdrawal from India." Gandhiji wrote in the Harijan : "The presence of the British in India is an innovation to Japan to invade India. Their withdrawal removes that bait." After few days he again wrote in the Harijan: "Leave India in God`s hands, or in modern parlance, to anarchy. Then the all parties will fight one another like dogs, or will, when real responsibility faces then come, to a reasonable agreement."

On July14,1942, The Congress Working Committee, in a resolution demanding withdrawal of the British power from India, said that: "Should this appeal fail, the Congress cannot view without the gravest apprehension the continuation of the present state of affairs involving a progressive deterioration of the situation and the weakening of Indian`s will or power to resist aggression. The Congress will then be reluctantly compelled to utilise all the non-violent it might have gathered since 1920…for vindication of political rights and liberty."

On August 8,1942, all The All India Congress Committee meeting at Bombay, while approving of and endorsing the resolution of the Working Committee and expressed the opinion that " events subsequent to it have given it further justification and have made it clear that immediate ending of British rule in India is an urgent necessity both for the sake of India and for the success of the cause of the United Nations. The continuation of that rule is degrading and enfeebling India and making her progressively less capable of defending herself and of contributing to the cause of world freedom."

As a result, on August 9, 1942, Gandhiji and all the members of the Working Committee were arrested and The All India Congress Committee and the Provincial Congress Committees were banded. But the people of India did not take this legal steps of the Government. There were many acts of violence and destruction of or damage to public property and in quite a number of places. Because there was a breakdown of Government machinery and dislocation of normal life and communications. While the Congress leaders disclaimed any responsibility for this outbreak of the violence, it is hard to believe that all of them were ignorant of such large-scale planning by the extremists. severe repression.

The general policy of the Government was to suppress the turbulence in India. On March23,1943 the Muslim League observed the day as a `Pakistan Day`. Mr. Jinnah sent a message to the Muslim population of India stating that the system of Pakistan was the final "national" goal of Muslim India. On April 26, the league resolution approved this view.
