Princely State of Sandur

The Princely State of Sandur was established by a Maratha nobleman Shrimant Sidalji Ghorpade, around 1700 CE. The neighboring territory came under the control of the Nizam of Hyderabad during the 18th century. The district of Bellary was reassigned to British India in the year 1801 and the rulers, also known as Rajas, of the princely state of Sandur came under the administrative control and political authority of the Madras Presidency. Sandur state was one of the most well known princely states prior to the independence of India and the capital of the state was at the town of Sanduru. The princely state was spread across a total area of 433 sq km. According to the 1901 Census of India, the total population of the region was 11,200. The military hospital of Ramandrug was situated in a range of hills on the western boundary of the territory.

The Raja of the princely state of Sandur acceede his state to the Union of India on 1st April 1949. Sandur state was merged and included into the district of Bellary, which was then a part of the Madras Presidency. Bellary District was later reassigned to the princely state of Mysore (now Karnataka) in the year 1953.
