The Princely State of Jamkhandi was included and administered as fraction of the Bombay Presidency during the rule of the British Empire in India. The princely state was later under the Deccan States Agency. The capital of the state was situated at Jamakhandi. The town of Kundgol, which is currently a panchayat town in the neighboring district of Dharwar in Karnataka state, was a non-contiguous part of Jamkhandi state, until the princely state was merged with the newly formed Union of India, after the nation attained independence.
The name of the princely state of Jamkhandi was derived from the temple of Jambukeshwar. The temple was named as such because it was located in the core area of a blueberry (also known as Jamun in Hindi and Jambul in Marathi) forest. At present a primary school named Swami Vivekananda English Medium School (Nutan Vidyalaya Kannada Gandu Makkala Shale in Kannada) has been established and operates from the precinct of the Jambukeshwar temple.
