Prabhakar Vardhan

Prabhakar Vardhan was a Samanta ruler in the beginning but later on had declared himself as independent. He is the first king of the Vardhana dynasty who is referred as `Maharajadhiraj` and `Param-bhattaraka`.

Prabhakar Vardhan belonged to the Pushabhukti family. According to Madhuban inscription he was a famous king. According to some scholars the Huns of Punjab, the Gurjar of Rajputana, the Latas of Singh and the kings of Gandhara and Malava had accepted his suzerainty. However it is also believed that his empire was limited to Thaneshwar only. Some other historians Punjab and eastern Rajputana were also included in his empire.

Regarding Prabhakara Vardhan, Bana`s work states that he was "a lion to the Huna deer, a burning fever to the king of the Indus land, a trouble to the sleep of the Gurjaras, a bilious plague to the lord of Gandhara and an axe to the creeper of Malwa`s glory". The very nature of the description indicates that he was on hostile terms with them.

He ruled from 580-605 A.D. Prabhakar Vardhan had two sons - Rajya Vardhan and Harshvardhan. He has also one daughter, Rajyasri. Prabhakar Vardhan was a staunch worshipper of sun. He died fighting with the Huns in 605 A.D.
