Ponda Fort

The Ponda Fort is a historical marvel in the state of Goa.

Ponda Fort, Ponda, GoaThe Ponda Fort is located in the west coast of India in the state of Goa in the city of Ponda. The current structure of the Ponda Fort is a reconstruction of the old primitive one in the same location. The fort is surrounded by a park and inside there is a statue of the Maratha Emperor, Shivaji.

History of Ponda Fort
In the early days, the city of Ponda was ruled by the Adil Shah Empire, where they also built the fort of Ponda. In 1664, the fort was attacked by the forces of Shivaji but the Portuguese came to Adil Shah"s aid and Shivaji could not capture the fort. Almost a decade later in 1675, Shivaji again attacked the Ponda Fort and this time he succeeded in capturing it.

After Shivaji"s death, the Ponda Fort was captured by the Portuguese in 1683. Shambhaji Maharaj, the son of Shivaji, made an alliance with Mohammed Akbar, who was Aurangzeb"s son and together with their joined military forces, he took back the fort. Eventually after the demise of Shambhaji Maharaj, the Ponda Fort came under the control of the Peshwa Empire.

The Madgaon Junction in Goa is the nearest railway station at a distance of about 22 km from the fort and the Goa International Airport is 35 km from the Ponda Fort.
