Pingalwara was established in Amritsar in August 1947 by a Sikh named Bhagat Puran Singh. It was informally founded informally in the year 1924 by a then 19 year old Ramji Das who later became famous as Bhagat Puran Singh. He wanted to help those has been rejected by the society.
At present it has facilities for 1080 patients who are fed, housed and looked with the support of various generous contributors. It also operates a free drug dispensary, a blood bank, a shelter for intellectually disabled children and a free primary school in a slum area in Amritsar city. It has branches in Jalandhar, Sangrur, Chandigarh, Goindwal and Manawala.
Philosophy of Pingalwara
The activities of Pingalwara have been laid down by Bhagat Puran Singh. A sick person who is unable to earn his livelihood should be looked after by men and organisations who are in the field of social service and charity. There need to be institutions where the patients can be looked after. Many poor patients are unable to purchase the required medicines, so they should be provided those. There are many other such problems which are common in the society which are handled by Pingalwara.
