Pawagadh Temples

Pawagadh temples are one of the ancient temples of Gujarat. Located at the top of the hill this includes a number of popular shrines which are revered among all the Hindus of India.

Among the well known shrines it includes the shrine of Mahakali that is dedicated to Goddess Parvati in the form of Goddess Kali. Located in Halol this place falls under the jurisdiction of Panchmahal district which is 46 kms from Vadodara. Situated at the top of the hill this place is surrounded with the small township of Champaner which is located at the foothills of the mountain.

Pawagadh is the gateway of Panchmahal district of Gujarat. Historically it is claimed that the city was created by the Rajput king Vanraj Chavda who also established the town of Champaren at the foothills of the hill. Predominantly the place which is populated by the Bhil tribe is one of the most picturesque sites of Gujarat. Known for its ancient shrine this place is also known for the local legend which claims that Goddess Parvati took a form of a woman and danced in the top of the hill where the temple is presently located. This place is surrounded by a number of waterfalls, plateaus; talavs and the ancient shrine which attract a number of tourists.

Along with other attractions Pawagadh is also known for the ropeway which makes it comfortable for the visitors to reach the temple. Known for the legendary deity of kali with four arms this is one of the most celebrated shrines of the place which is also known for excellent architecture. This is included among the 51 Shakti Peeth of India. According to the legend Devi Parvati`s right fell in this part of the hill which was later on conver5ted into a temple. At the foot of the hill there is a mazar of a Pir as well as well.

Thus with its picturesque scenic beauty and architecture this is one of the most celebrated sited in Gujarat.
