Panchajana is a demon in the form of a couch shell that lived in the sea of Prabhasa. Panchajana was killed by Lord Krishna, in order that the son of Sandipani might be rescued.
Panchajana is also the name of Krishna`s conch. It was made of the bones of the giant Panchajana. There is a mythical story in which it is said that when Krishna was getting up his military acquirements. The son of his acharya, or tutor, Sandipani, was drowned in the sea of Prabhasa, and carried down to the bottom by Panchajana. Krishna plunged in, dived down, slew the giant, brought up his bones to make a conch of, and restored his son to the grieving tutor.
