Nath Siddha Chaurangi

Nath Sidhha Chaurangi was a Nath Siddha mahapurus and a disciple of Nath Siddha Gorakhnath. Legends say that Nath Sidhha Chaurangi was the son of King Devapala of Bengal. Devapala`s first wife died while Chaurangi was still a child, and his father married a woman who resorted to deception in order to place her own son on the throne. Nath Sidhha Chaurangi was taken to a forest clearing where his arms and legs were cut off. Here Nath Sidhha Chaurangi confronted Matsyendranath who instructed Nath Sidhha Gorakhnath to care for the limbless youth. Nath Sidhha Gorakhnath taught him the yoga of pot-like breath retention or the humbhaka and after twelve years of this practice his limbs were unbelievably restored by the power of his own realization.

His name Nath Sidhha Chaurangi probably is derived from "Four Limbs (anga)," and the shape of his torso as a bulb or Qianda. This shape of his body possibly refers to his practice of Khanda Manda yoga. Nath Sidhha Chaurangi is said to have founded the great Kali temple of Kalighat in Kolkata. The main north-south thoroughfare across the city of Calcutta is thus known after his name as Chowringhee.
